Why did you sack me?

Never, in a million years would I ever have expected to hear again from the first person I fired.

But there she was, six years later, at the end of the phone. We exchanged pleasantries, and then she got right down to the reason for her call: “I want to know why you fired me.”

Her question took me straight back to 2008 and those first few difficult months when I started editing a newspaper. As part of cutbacks, I had to lay off the No. 2 editor, a man in his 70s who was once my mentor. It also meant that my reporters had to produce more stories and more blogs, with a smaller budget. And when one of them failed to produce what was required, I had to fire her.

Why did you sack me?

sack (v.)

Never, in a million years would I ever have expected to hear again from the first person I fired.

But there she was, six years later, at the end of the phone. We exchanged pleasantries寒喧;玩笑>>>從字首”pleas”可以判斷這是正面的、歡愉的名詞,就算不知道意思,在電話裡頭的談的正題之外,通常都是輕鬆的問候及說笑, and then she got right down to追根究底 the reason for her call: “I want to know why you fired me.”>>>有沒有看到相呼應的字?

Her question took me straight back to 2008 and those first few difficult months when I started editing a newspaper. As part of cutbacks削減, I had to lay off遣散>>>既然提到fire(開除),這兩個字眼都是比較負面的相關詞,例如cut是減、off是離去 the No. 2 editor, a man in his 70s who was once my mentor導師>>>這個字沒有前後文可以推敲,代表在本篇文章不是重點(如果是重要的主題,絕對會在文章中反覆提及),所以即使猜不出個所以然,也不會影響閱讀. It also meant that my reporters had to produce more stories and more blogs, with a smaller budget預算>>>上一句提到由於縮編人員,剩下的員工需要分擔更多的工作,而且一家公司縮編人員的主因就是錢縮水了,所以這個字一定是跟金錢有關. And when one of them failed to produce what was required, I had to fire her.
